yes thats right.....

tour of poland commentating with- I think -carlton kirby.

normally both are intensely irritating. put them together - entertaining.

its a very satisfactory combination.

    Nope !!!
  • are you crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • It certainly made me chortle yesterday when there were sound problems for Harmon and Kelly after a couple of hours of Duffers and Kirbs. They remind me of what commentary would sound like if I tried to do it, which is why I find it hard to scorn.

With Carlton and David, the question is begged, "Who is the pipe, and who is the slippers...?"

I can safely say that if there's one commentator I find more irritating that Duffers... it's Carlton Kirby. He sounds like a really cheesy, Smashie and Nicie-esque local radio DJ. Horrendous.
  • As I was watching it occurred that maybe they are playing a game to see how long they can commentate without pausing or repetition. The race is just rolling along and they are going at it 200 words a minute. For all that I'd still take them over some of the characterless commentators some sports have to put up with.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • was fascinated to be told during todays commentary that it was only Mark Cavendishes stage wins that kept this years TDF interesting;i personally found the GC quite interesting this year rather than the sprint results for the "in between"(theyre known as "in between" for a reason....)stages,particularly as the sprints were so dominated by one individual.but thats just me,obviously easily amused.
what was the comment Duffers was apologising for, btw?

    Presumably it's this:

    http://uk.messages.eurosport.yahoo.com/ ... 1&mid=1767

The asterisked out word is extremely offensive and begins with N, by the way (I'd never heard that phrase before in my life).

I know he's old, but jeez...
  • Amazing... I just heard the apology on the highlights and logged on here to find out what he said.

    "Consigned to the past..."

    hmmm should he be?

oh dear!as you say,i know hes old but while age can mean you lose touch with more modern ways of expressing yourself its also meant to bring a little bit of wisdom.I appreciate there are some phrases that older folk find it hard to understand why theyre offensive but that particular one is pretty obvious.maybe eurosport should have a seven second time lapse to their live coverage ,like radio phone ins do, if Duffers is commentating!
  • yes dont forget that when duffers was a niPPer the N word was in common use!

he obviously had a lapse-lay off Duffers hes a legend!!

As it happens we've just had a Local Councillor get into bother for exactly the same expression. It's the BIG news in our SMALL local paper. He's from my generation - younger than DD.

For your amusement, here's how much of a fuss it can cause in the world of tiny-town local politics -

  • Talking government here.
It's a sign of the times, when people get more upset about a misjudged comment, that's lost it's historical significance, than they do escalating knife crimes in the UK.
Seems words can puncture skin, more readily than cold steel, in the PC World.
Given the choice between getting upset, or dead, I know which I'd choose!

I couldn't agree more BS. Maybe I'd also include attitudes to sentencing of drivers who kill too.
