I need to buy a bike repair stand, but they all seem quite expensive..
do you use one? and if so which one?
and any recommendations for a decent stand for home use at a reasonable price?
Cheers
keith

I don't know how I did without one....

I use this one and it fits the bill nicely http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/LifeLine_Spin_Doctor_Deluxe_Workstand/5360009217/

  • I may get one one day. Trying to adjust break pads with the bike leaning up against a radiator in the hall way provides nothing but frustration! Not exactly at the top of my list for a while though. All comes down to £££...

They're great for anything where you need to spin the wheels - or take em off; brake alignment, chain lubing, mech adjusting, fork maintenenance. And the other good thing is to get everything up to your level rather than bending over. All nice and stable as well.

Didn't get mine from Merlin, and didn't get the tools either. But the stand itself is well made, works and is pretty solid to work on. Just remember its only got 3 feet tho'! Not too expensive either at £65, definately better than working on your knees!

Yes this is cheap, but it’s not exactly raising the bike up so you can work on it standing up, the guy is pictured kneeling down!

That looks good for £65, might be tempted at the end of the month

Something like this might be a good alternative:

I've got one of these, it's my first proper stand and it's great! Don't know how I went for years without one. In the campsite at 24-12 there were loads of these around, too - perhaps everyone was a tight-wad too!!

  • I found this on Epay. £95 landed form the states (some guy bought it and never used it...bargain) So ebay could be worth a nosey.

Cant fault it, and if you go to a few races it is really handy and solid as a rock.

  • I bolted 2 bits of 2x1" wood to the top of my log store. A couple of smaller bits screwed on the top stops the bike sliding down. Works a treat!

Another £65 Merlin user here too - very happy with it!

Helped me out no end last night trying to adjust my gears and give the bike a super clean and lube. Couldn't live without it!

I have that lifeline spin doctor one mentioned above - was cheap on Wiggle with a toolkit but not massively impressed.

Doesn't grip the bike great and not terribly stable.

Quick to put up and down though.

Check this one out, Ive brought one and it works a treat, its similar to the Tacx 3000 reviewed in this months WMB but with the added bonus of folding up as its a tripod, best of all its 30 quid! :Dhttp://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/ws-100-workstand-3960349/

I got mine from EB in their sale, I think Ribble have it in there sale for £56 however I can't check as virgin media have broken their router.
It's the same model that is sold under bike-tool, unsion, revolution and various other brands on ebay.

How are you "not gripping the bike well"? Get mine round the seatpost, no worries. Only issue I have is if you take the back wheel out.... gets a bit unstable then.

  • I bought a bike hoist from Aldi at the beginning of the summer when they had there shades in and cycle computer. Fits to the joists in my garage, hooks around the handle bars and seat and you can winch it up and lock it off at any height. Bought 2 so I can pack away the wifes bike aswell. £4.99! and the local one still had some in when I checked Wednesday...Works really well...

The jaws won't go narrow enough to grip the seatpost, instead the bottom of the saddle takes the weight and the bike wobbles about a lot (two of my bikes have 27.2 seatposts).

If I move the jaws to the horizontal position they work better - but only one of my three bikes has a suitably cable-free top tube (and that's the one I never need to fettle).

Also, the neck seems to swing about a bit, which can make the whole contraption fall over if there are any sudden movements - like taking a wheel off as you mention.

have you put it together correct

i have that spindoctor one when it was in sale at £40 on wiggle

you can adjust the grip by turning the handle on top of the clamp

    great stand for the money

My bike has both gear cables (and brake hose) running under the top tube, does this mean you can't shift gears when the bike is in the clamp? sounds a bit crap to me :?

clamp it to the seat post instead.

I have a patriot and there is no effin way the clamp is getting round the toptube in one that!

After too many yrs of deliberating, I have just purchased the ubiquitous £65 work stand from CRC after getting frustrated today trying to clean / work my bike upside down. Me and my back are really looking forward to it arriving some point next week. :)

i also have the revolution/merlin one and have had it for about 18 months, cost about 30 quid off ebay and is absolutely perfect, takes the weight of any of my current bikes fine and was ok with my old reign too which weiged in at about 33 lbs!!

Fair enough, but I also have a 27.2 seatpost, I never clamp it up tight anyway... Yer, it slides down to the saddle rails, no probs so far.
Watching the mechanic at the LBS, he just hangs bikes off a bar on a stand by the saddle...

Just finished cleaning / adjusting my bike with the help of my new CRC £65 workstand, very impressed, the stand is well made, bigger than I expected and holds my bike with easy. As everyone says its soooo much easier to work on your bike, wish I had purchased on yrs ago.
  • Another vote for the decathlon one.
