Ugly Shimano Nexus hub question

I've a friend (without broadband) who has asked me for advice.
He has Shimano Nexus hubs on his commuting bike which he thinks look ugly due to the large metal heat sink/cooling discs on them. He wants to know if it is possible and safe to take them off. He's a large bloke (about 18 stone) but has checked if the discs get hot after heavy, continuous braking, which they don't. He's good at fettling bike stuff so would be able to remove them himself.

Rear brake:

Rear hub:

Thanks.

Um,...this is the brake your taking about? :? Um,...no. You cannot fit another disc to the hub. If it works why does he want to take it off? You'd be looking at changing the wheels, shifters, brakes.....jedster wrote:Just off to contemplate my own mortality and inevitable descent into decrepedness.
FCN 8 off road because I'm too old to go racing around.0 -
The hubs and brakes work fine. Internal hub brake, not a disc brake. The disc bit only cools the brake but they never get hot themselves (the discs that is). They have channels that look as if they might push air into the hub to cool them.
He thinks the discs are not really required and look ugly.0 -
Only one way to find out Huck take em off. However I dont think Shimano go to expense of producing a totally superflous part in a brake.Looking at the exploded diagram the part in question looks to be inegral to the hub.

I think they look quite cool and its probably not a good idea to go round randomly cutting bits off your bike. The gear changing, helmet wearing fule.
