Hi there!

There are most probably hundereds of threds similar to this one, however, I'm a Solicitor with little time on my hands and need my fellow bike enthusiasts ideas.

I've recently come into a bit of money and have between £1300 and £1500 to spend on a new road bike.

I presently have a Bianchi 1885 which is approximately 3 years old now, I've loved every single ride on it and have recently turned it into a part time time trialling bike.

I'm looking for another Italian bike with Campagnolo components.

There is so much choice out there at the moment that I really don't know where to start looking. I've considered the Willier Izoard Pro but this is probably slightly out of my price range.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Not a bad looking bide and the spec is pretty decent for that sort of price.

Only seen Viper bikes in C+ Magazine, never actually seen anyone riding one before.

Does anyone own one of these?
  • I will in about 4 weeks :D

I have a Maxima on order

I have seen most of the Viner frames in my LBS (but not the Magista). Finish on them is beautiful and apart from the Cyclescheme Gladius are all built in Italy. And as you state - not many ride them so you will stand out on your local roads.
  • Yes I like the look of that one but it doesn't come as a complete bike, those Reynolds wheels look pretty awesome.

I've been looking at Colnago bikes but they just seem to come with Shimano 105 or Ultegra.

Does anyone have any experience of Colnago bikes and what is the 105 groupset like?

    Thanks
  • Any decent LBS that stocks Colnago should be able to build it up to your spec. Please don't put Shimano on a Colnago, it'll just look wrong!
  • What about the new Pinarello FP3

think that will come in at £1500 or so.
  • Treat yourself to a Trek Madone 5.2. Its amazing!

If you like Bianchi, then why not a 928 C2C with Veloce or Centaur?

I've got the 105 version and its a great bike!

Oh and I feel like I've been raped by an Orangutan  And I've got legs like Girders

Or a secondhand Ti frame with good wheels and Veloce / Centaur could be built for that money...

Oh, and I happen to be selling my Ti frame...:lol: 8)
  • I love the look of the Pinarello FP3, is that the 2009 frame?

I'm seriously considering the 2009 Bianchi 928, does anyone know when it will be available to purchase?

I've also seen the Planet X with Dura Ace for 1k, just not the biggest fan of Shimano and have a love for italian bikes!!!

I agree that a Colnago should not be supplied with Shimano, spoils the whole italian theme!

The Planet X is not Italian though.

If I were you I would ask Epic Cycles when are they going to release the Onix Bira 2009 as they look incredibly sweet ...

  • You're not kidding, that does look like a sweet ride, any ideas of how much these will be retailing at?

I know Planet X are not italian, I was commenting that although the Bike looks pretty cool, it comes with Shimano components and as I love italian frames it has put me off buying one. It's an absolute bargain though!

Alot of Ribble's bikes are Italian - some models are made in Italy, others designed there. You could put any gruppo on through their website. Great value.

    Orbea's aren't Italian either, they're Basque!

I know you want an Italian bike, but some Italian bikes don't give you bang for your buck, those that do are generally made in Taiwan and assembled in Italy. Viner bikes are good VFM, but IMO they don't have the same brand value as Colnago, Bianchi and Pinarello.

However, your choice of Campag is definitely the correct one though!

Yes they are great brands - but not really Italian anymore (apart from their HQ Offices)

What about looking at a Tomassini?

I would say, just get the bike which fits you, and one which you like the look of. If there are a number that match that criteria, then go for the one which you perceive to be the best value. I wasn't trying to put you off buying an "Italian" bike, just making sure that you realised that many of them aren't really Italian!
