Specialized Tricross

Hi - First post but have been lurking on forum since start.
Presently commute on Ribble winter frame with 105 which doesnt allow for tyres greater than 23mm, and after one p***ture too many - even with Armadillos, I am considering Specialized Tricross Comp which should handle the rough road suface on my commute better. Question is I would like it to be able to do some forest trails. Is it well up to this or is it really a pseudo cross bike?
Any other opinions on the Tricross would be appreciated. LBS has 2008 model at £999 or 2009 model at £1199.
Thanks

I'm a big fan of the looks and practicality of the Tricross, but before you commit to a new toy, order yourself a pair of 23mm Schwalbe Stelvio Plus tyres. They are the racing bike equivalent of the Marathons, which give great p* protection and a nice cushioning effect to the ride (due to the rubber layer between the innertube and the outer side of the tyre.================
