I went to my local shop a couple of days ago. I saw an 09 Pinarello, FP5 set up out with Campag Cenaur
However, the £2,200 bike was set up with a compact. :? I was surprised. At that price range, I was expecting 53/39

If it's a 11-23 cassette then the gears will be wider range than 53/39 12-24.
I'm having a new bike built up with a compact. Always ridden 53/39 but it makes more sense to go 50/34.0 -
If you consider where the leisure money is, it is not surprising that the bike is set up for the over 40 cyclist. Aspiring Cavendish's, at 18-23 do not have this sort of available cash. So a compact chain set satisfies this market better than a 39/53.
There is money in cyclosportif. At 51, I know I have more disposable income than I had in my 20's and can afford a nice carbon bike.0
