I've got a Specialized Allez that I've been riding for just over a year, and I'm thinking about treading the upgrade path, starting with my wheels. A couple of questions really - is this a good place to start, and what would people recommend for around £150? I've been looking at a Fulcrum 5 wheelset, what do people think? If it helps I'm 5'10" and 162lbs (and reducing).

  • pbt,
I can't help you with your wheels quality -- you;ll always get people who say its worth it or nit. What you really need to do is talk to an expert at your LBS and see what they think would be the differences between the current wheels and the new ones. I mean it is worth getting news wheels if they only have a perceived difference and not a real one... its not like your going from base level to 404's.

Perhaps you;d be better saving mote money and making s real difference. I bought e new bike yesterday and it had Ksyrium wheels and the guy on the shop said not to think about getting new wheels until I am prepared to pay for a top of the range pair.,, he said there was no point.

  • For £150? I'd ask at your LBS for secondhand wheels...I loved the Mavic Ksyrium's on my geared bike (see below), and think the Aksiums (the yonger brother if you like) would be good too. Ask about secondhand, you might get lucky...

FCN 3 or 4 on road depending on clothing
FCN 8 off road because I'm too old to go racing around.

If your Allez came with the same rubbishy wheels (Alex AT400's on Specialized hubs) as mine I'd say a set of Mavic Aksiums or Fulcrum Racing 5's would do you the world of good.
  • RARE is the bikeshop that won't talk you into something. They're biased because they stand to profit by it...

What wheels did the bike come with?
  • Hi
I have just upgraded the wheels on my Allez sport, from alex AT400s to Bontrager Race Lites. As Lagavulin said, it has made a big difference.
It might be worth looking round as I got my Racelites on E-bay for under £200 new and boxed. They ride loads better and look good too.
    Cheers
