OK. Totally random thought here. Would you pass a UCI drugs test? :?:

I certainly wouldn't! My GP occasionally fills me with steroids - totally legit, for arthritis in my shoulder. So that counts me out.

Totally spurious too. Can't see anybody objecting to my 27' 17" on my last club TT

There's probably loads of things on the banned list that the rest of us take for granted. Let guess at Benylin - probably breaks the meter...

So, go on then. Reckon you would pass?

  • Yep - unless lager is a banned substance I'm okay.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • Now caffines off the banned-list i'm fairly confident my 4 cup a day habit wouldn't tip the scales.

    Which leaves Jennings Bitter...

    Yep.

All I take is Jollop. A family recipe based on apple-cider vinegar, molasses, hot-water (tastes even worse cold), honey and lemon juice. Not sure it would help me up a mountain in a rainstorm and a headwind, but it might stop me getting a pneumonia afterwards.

The possible Benylin restriction would be a bummer though. Perhaps I can sell pre-bottled Jollop on the Tour as a risk-free alternative to all the shop cures?

Well, unless the chicken I'm eating is filled with something, yes 100% I'd pass. But really, can we all guarantee that the food we eat is 100% clean and devoid of any of the thousands of banned substances? I don't take anything (not even caffeine) but I do eat meat and I do take energy drinks and bars on long rides and there's a certain degree of trust that they use proper quality control and tell the truth about what's in there. Remember, there have been some athletes where it's been proven (and CAS has accepted it as truth) that they took a legal supplement that had a banned substance in it that was not listed on the bottle.

Having been in a testing pool in my junior days, I know for a fact I wouldn't pass the test today. They'd find corticosteroids and Salbutamol from my asthma medication (I forgot to renew my TUE), some allergy medicine and maybe traces of pseudoephedrine and DXM from the awful cough syrup I took at a friend's place a few days back. My own all-natural variety is legal, though.

    Still, I am calm.

Yes with a medical exemption certificate from my GP - for salbutamol - otherwise no

and if it is believed my love of Vicks inhalers might be dubious also

No unless they gave me a TUE for Seretide (asthma inhaler). I don't know about the homeopathic remedies I take (from registered practitioner) or the Bach flower remedies. Would they show up ?
    Not that it matters.....

Incidentally try Pau d'arco to build up immune system especially as winter approaches.

I'm glad someone picked up on that - saved me penning a withering remark!

Are there any, errr, 'recreational' drugs on the banned list?

Alcohol is only controlled for 3 sports
    Automotive Sport
    Motorcycle Sport
    and something obscure like Dominoes

Nasal Cortico-steroids apparently don't need a TUE for them because they are nasal. How the difference between Nasal and Oral Inhalers (which do need a TUE) can be identified I don't know.

Passed the tests I had to do when the Home Office were providing my accomodation some years back.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Homeopathic wouldn't show up, you can't test for placebo effect!
I'd bet on most OTC cold & cough remedies would cause a positive test, that Scottish slalom skiier lost his Olympic Bronze over that one (Same brand name, different formulation for US version compared to UK)

After a broken bone injury 9 years ago, and subsequent joint stiffness problems, at the recommendation of the sports therapist, I took a gelatine solution for some months, only to later find out such solutions are on the doping list.
If this means other gelatine products like jelly and wine gums are also suspect, then I mightn't pass a test even now!

The list is below and it appears that recreational drugs are banned. Cocaine is banned as a stimulant and Mary Joanna is just banned. Why bother though? Neither are going to make you any faster. The effects of Coke dont last long enough and as for smoking a fat one surely that will just make you stop at every petrol station for chocolate and crisps*

Now, I find that answer really interesting!

At what level, does real life actual testing kick in?

I hope I wouldn't. It would mean that all those drugs the doctor gives me aren't doing a thing. Add to that the fact that you are much more famous if you fail. You make the news,
maybe a book deal, the tabloids will love you. Drugs are the way to go.

Cheers for the link SG, makes interesting reading (and should improve my Scrabble scores). I see wobbly eggs (MDMA/Ecstasy for those who weren't involved in the 90s rave scene) are banned too under s6, not surprising really. As for the why bother question, a less upstanding person than me might say because there's so much more to life than going fast on a bike, but I couldn't possibly concur.

It's obvious that homeopathic remedies wouldn't show up as David Moncoutie is an adherant of them, as well.
Some of you may scoff but I believe they work for me.

In theory it could 'kick in' as soon as anyone starts competing in British Cycling or Cycling Time Trials races and time trials. I can't recall what it says on a BC entry form but every entrant to a CTT open event signs a declaration that they will take part in any dope testing as required.

In practice as a time triallist I've personally never seen any dope testers except at national championships, but I believe they may occasionally appear at other events. It's seemed to me in recent years that they have focused on testing a handful of the medal contenders but Mr Friendly Chappie who leapt out in front of me and stopped me going for a cool-down potter last Sunday tried to convince me it was a totally random out-of-the-hat selection in that case.

    Hi there.

On the triathlon side of things, testing is virtually non-existant outside of the pro field. The only amateur I've ever seen tested was at the age-group world championships.

The professional side is different matter, I was talking this over with an Irish guy I know who races pro. He has 3 or 4 out of competition tests by his national federation every year - on top of any stuff at races. I've seen the guys waiting for him poolside before!

I doubt there are more than a handful of pro cyclists who get tested 4 times a year out of competiton.

    Cheers, Andy

I wouldn't be so sure about that, Andy. I only know (or follow closely the progress of) a couple of British women pro riders but both seem to be tested very regularly out of competition.
