Hey Guys! After being a newbie and knowing nothing about bikes, ive had advice from peeps on this forum and after considering getting a Hybrid, ive been told i would regret not buying a road bike! So as i like flat bars, many of you have said have a look at the Giant FCR. Ive had a look at them at a local dealer and he will do me the FCR2 for £450 (not that cheap as ive looked on the net!) and the FCR1 for £475 instead of £650 as these are the last 2 left in this years colours.

They are both Medium size (50cm) frame and he said he has a FCR1 Alliance himself in a Med size and he is the same height as me at 6ft. I was a bit worried that the frame might be a little small looking. Obviously i sat on it with the saddle adjusted and the guy said that most road bike riders have a more compact frame nowadays! Is this true?
Also, i looked up frame sizing on google(altho this can vary from site to site!) and after measuring my inside leg and doing the necessary mine worked out to 53cm! The next size up is med-large(53.5cm) which he cant get anymore in a 2008 model.
Should i go for it or is he just trying to get rid of his bikes? Thanks very much everyone!

Not sure if it's comparable, but I sat on a medium sized Giant SCR 1.5 last weekend, which certainly seemed the right size for me and I'm a Gian-Franco Zola-like 5.6!
Giant's website was again to find sizing guides on, but Tredz have a Giant-specific sizing guide that might help you:

I see there's one for the FCR and it looks like large might suit you better?
  • Cheers for that Bar. I did possibly think the medium would be a tad small!

Talking of Gianfranco Zola - Up The Hammers!
  • 6' and 50cm frame hmmmmm, i dunno alot but i'm 6' and i got a 54cm cannondale and a 57cm kuota and the 54 seems small for me, i'm sure more informed folk will enlighten you soon though...........
  • Actually scratch that, probably different on flat bars, ahem, taxi!

Not to change sports mid forum, but too right!
Especially if we can nick Steve Clarke (any relation?) from arch-hypocrites Chelsea.

Back to cycling now, especially as the sun is unexpectedly shining and I need to get out from writing an assignment and get on my bike.

Are there any other Giant retailers you can try a FCR large in? That way you could decide definitively what was right for you - size charts be damned! - and buy, more or less, from the internet with confidence.

Btw google Chris' cycles Cambridge for prices.

This may help, size lrg, top tube says 57.5cm
    medium top tube is 54.5
looks like ml would be ideal if you could get one
  • Cheers for that guys, you have been most helpful!

Oh and Bar. - Back to footie, unfortunately Steve Clarke ( e on the end of Clarke i.e. the posh spelling and myself no e on the end of Clark i.e. the pikey spelling - well so im told anyway!) isnt a relative :( - If he was, and he does join West ham, just think of the free tickets!

Clark no E pikey? Try Lee (no igh)
Free tickets and the benefit of annoying the little lord Faultleroys of the premiership.
    Double bonus
  • Morning clarkie28,

I bought the Giant FCR2 07/08 model in July for £370 from Winstanleys at Wigan. They said when I bought the bike that they still had quite a few in.

I am 5"11 and got the medium frame the medium large they do was to big for me and would have left me in serious pain because of the stand over height. I have flipped the stem messed with the seat and it all seems ok.

I did two twenty mile rides this weekend 1hr09 and 1hr10 so even tho its a flat bar bike it will shift.

Couple of issues with noises and things that make me think the bike isnt set up quite right so I need to get it checked out.

Otherwise loving it loads faster than my mtb makes you want to go out and ride which was why I bought it.
