Anyone affected by XL going bust?

I am, I had a holiday booked and the flights were with XL. Luckily the agent is not part of XL, so I still have some chance of getting a holiday, or at least getting my money back. Problem is the agents phones are jammed right now and I can't get through... oh well, we're not supposed to fly until 22nd, so hopefully that's enough time to sort alternative flights... :(

If you paid via credit card, you may be able to claim from the CC company. Same thing happened to me a few years back, but Visa recredited the full amount.
  • I think a lot of poor folk are affected, i heard it's about 85,000 stranded abroad

I'm not (although at least 300,000 are).

But on this very weekend last year I was travelling out on Friday by Eurotunnel to ride Etape Legende and then returning on Monday to fly XL to Crete on the Tuesday. Good job that was 2007's plans.

It'll pay to check our holiday insurance, book with a CC and check status of provider with ATOL/ABTA in future - more than we might have in the past anyway.

Sorry for you guys if it effects your holidays. As a West Ham supporter, I was a little concerned (the money is always useful) apparently XL have already parted with the money for sponsorship and the club can seek new sponsors if there is any business failure.

Visa Debit cards have as part of the issuing requirements have a guarantee/refund system "chargeback" similar to that of Credit Cards. This is apparently one of the reasons banks have been abandoning Mastercard i nrecent years.
Apparently if a company gets too many Chargebacks done on them the bank that provides their terminals have to act as well by fining, raising rental or removing ther terminal service. Hm could sink Tesco.....

Read that West Ham will lose approx £5m and will wear blank shirts tomorrow.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Well, I'm guaranteed a refund from my travel agent, so that's good news, but still waiting to find out whether we'll get the refund or rescheduled flights... It's looking like being a refund at the moment, but I'd much rather have the holiday!
  • I thought that all the West Ham jerseys had their sizes printed on the front.
Be nice to grumpy old men (or else!)
  • Bad news: no holiday somwhere sunny for me :(

Good news: holiday in Devon means I get to take my bike :D
