Tyre Widths and choice Merida Marathons???

Doing the Penrith ride this weekend, my second one, selkirk being the first.
Was wondering what determines the best tyre widths to run? \i did the selkirk on some 2.24 wtb moto raptors.
Actually, for 3 years, have only ever ridden them!
Have just bought some TRailrakers 2.1and they look skinny!
With all the rain we've had, \i was thinking going for a good mud tyre like this.
Any other thoughts? And what about the width issue?
