Snowdon Ranger

Planning a ride up (and down :D ) Snowdon in a few weeks. Was going to go up the Llanberis path and then down the Rangers path until I looked at the map and saw how far the end of the Rangers path is from the start of the Llanberis path :(

The question is:- is it feasible to ride up the Rangers path. Don't mind walking up a bit of it but don't fancy a hike up a rocky mountain in my SPD shoes!

Cheers

  • I've ridden up Llanberis and down the Rangers. I doubt you'd be able to do much riding at all, going up the Rangers, it's way too rocky in places and was hard enough riding down! It is possible to go down the Rangers and end up back at Llanberis, that's what we did. Part way down the Rangers (can't remember where off hand), you have to turn off to the right and climp over another (nasty) peak but then you have a straight down hill run into Llanberis, where I strongly suggest you reward yourself with a huge breakfast from Pete's Eats! :)

  • Is the voluntary bike ban still in force?

  • It has been agreed that between the hours of 10.00 am and 5 pm from 1st May to 30th September cyclists should not cycle on the Snowdon bridleways, only 2 weeks to go.

    Thanks for the replies.

Took a walk up the Ranger path today with the girlfriend. It is safe to say that I will not be going up it on my bike and to be honest I don't think I will be riding down it either. Large sections of the first half of the descent were way to steep and rocky for my liking / ability with lots of potential 'over the bars and into sharp rocks' moments.

The second half of the descent did look very good though, some nice flowing sections with some gaps to bunny hop and some nice drop offs to tackle.

How did you get on with it beardeddave? Did you actually clear the said rocky sections or did you get off and carry the bike down? I imagine this would have been a challenge in itself :)

I did quite a bit of carrying. Some of the guys I ride with, who are a bit more skilled than me, managed to ride pretty much all of it though. There was a helmetcam video on the Singletrack website a while ago (at least a year) taken by someone riding it and they managed to clear it all without getting off, so it can be done!
