Slick wheels for my new ride

Just got my Commi Combi DLX and it's a real sweet ride but at the moment with the crappy weather most of my riding is commuting so I was thinking about getting some tires better suited for roads.
At the moment it sits on Alex double wall rims with Kenda Small block eight tyres front and rear.
If i buy a complete new set of wheels I guess that means I'll have to get cassettes and disks to go with. Can i get away with just new tires and tube? If so can anyone recommend any?
