Have to confess i'm a road bike man , so aint got the foggiest about MTB's.Anyhows my lad is ten and is mad for a mountain bike.I want to get him a decent one without hurting the bank-about £200 and one that will last a few years.Any suggestions on size ,type ,brand will be most welcome.

I'd have a trip to Halfords and try out the smaller sized Carrera Vulcan. Also look for a Giant dealer - the Giant Boulder is a very good bike for the money.

Fit is important. OK, he is growing, but don't go too big as can be dangerous. And painful lol.

To get one that will last a few years you will need to spend a little more like £300+

Size, go try the local shops

Avoid full suspension bikes at this price.

Look for brands like GT, Giant, Specialized, Carrera, Mongoose, Trek, loads of top name brands do £300+ bikes that are pretty decent.
