Does anyone know if you can get over (on a road bike) Waste Hill in the Peckforton range from Higher Burwardsley to the village of Peckforton. I've checked it in Memory map which shows an unmade road!!??
Thanks
Steve

  • I've looked on Google Earth and it looks like it might be just possible, it's only showing a small section as not being a road and there's an official footpath which runs along the small section of unmade road (according to my ordnance survey map) before it becomes a road again. If it becomes impossible to ride it then you could alway get off and walk your bike the rest of the way.

If I can get to the top of Moel Famau with my bike then this should be a doddle. Although I didn't have clipless pedals in those days.
  • It's only ridable for the brave on a road bike - it's fine if rough until you get to the bridge then it turns to a 17th century pack horse road with huge cobbles of which about 60% are missing. Pretty steep too.
There's probaby 200 yards of this then it gets easier and it becomes a quarter of a mile of sandy road until you get to the top and back to tarmac.
The only time I've done it we rode from the other side - which was a pretty tough climb in itself - and found ourselves walking down the roughest section of the descent. It's one of those ones which is probably easier to ride up than down.
Give it a go though - the worst that can happen is walking or turning around...
  • Thanks OllyBianchi, on the road.
I'm going to give it go...I'll let you know how i get on
