What time do you leave in the morning?

Just thought I'd ask, as having recently had two months off the bike due to injury, I am finding it very hard to find the motivation to get up in time for the 6.30am commute to work.

What time does everyone leave in the morning and, for all you early birds, how do you get back into it after having some time off?

I know I'll be fine once I've been riding for a few days - it's just the initial push I need.

  • 6.30. I have a few friends that I commute with. The social aspect and the feeling that people are 'depending' on me really helps me with motivation.

  • I try to leave no later than 7 [after having my cereal of course]. Then i ride the 7 miles to work using the first couple of roads to warm the muscles up..

I usually drag me lazy arse out the door between 8.30 and 9. I could manage earlier if I had to, but the job doesn't demand it. Very handy in winter, avoiding everyone driving to work in the dark still half asleep.

I leave for work at either 6:10am or 6:30am depending on the train I choose to catch. I also fit a 5-6 mile run in before this though (which means leaving the house just before 5am) which is where I notice it more if I've had a few days of being out of routine.

There's no easy way round it other than easing yourself back slowly (ease off the pace for a few days) and getting up a few minutes earlier to brew an extra strong double espresso.

  • If on the bus/tram then I leave at around 6/6:15.

    If by bike then 7ish.

    I didn't even know there was a 5am

I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet, make my coffee extra strong...

Motivation ? not being in a car, or bus stuck in traffic. 50 quid a month saved on fuel.
being fit and healthy, with a healthy appetite that I can indulge (within reason of course).

7.45ish - cycle 10 miles into the countryside and back home again - where we run our little PR company
Not the most essential "commute" but I can't get through a day without it now.
  • For me it varies, but my earliest start see's me leaving at about 7:40ish for a 13 mile ride to Thames Ditton and for my latest I can leave around 8:30, walk the kids to school then ride 2.5 miles to work and still be in and changed by 9!

Central London sites usually see me leaving around 8-8:15 - part of the thing I enjoy with my role is the constantly changing commute :-D

  • tend to leave about 7ish, depending when I can be bothered to get up. In work for about 0815, and showered all ready for 0830. But I don't have set start or finish times, its just the London roads tend not to be so busy the earlier you start.

Mrs. gets up at 6.30, so I do to, leaving the house at 7.30 if I'm cycling. If she's not going to work some day I'll be up at 7.00. I don't like being on the roads in the height of rush hour.
Today is a good day to ride

    Now the hard work starts.
  • Between 6.30 and (latest) 7.00 to get in and showered by 9.00. I like to get up about an hour before I leave to give time to digest breakfast, have a chat with the wife and (not very often) the kids before I go.
  • I work 12 hour shifts, so you'll all think me mad, just as my colleagues do at work, but when I'm on days, I leave at 04.00 a.m., in order to arrive at 05.30 a.m.. The distance is just over 19 miles each way, when I'm days I rarely see any traffic at all for the first 10 miles on an old A road, which has been superceded by a dual carriageway, then the remaining 9 or so miles is through Neath and then along a cycle path to Port Talbot. Everyone thinks I'm nuts, including my family, but I love it, it's pitch black when I start out, so I need good lights to find my way. The only bad part is I have to go to bed very early i.e., 09.00 p.m..

Alarm goes off at 5 am, out the door at 5.20.

    8 - 10 miles into Exeter.

I don't start work until 8, but I prefer the early quite commute to the rush hour madness.

I even cycled in on Tuesday, probably my wettest commute in nearly 2 years!!

  • up at 5:20, stretch, feed the cats, drink espresso. Out by 6, climb off bike around 7. Either swim or eat ridiculously large pile of toast before work starts at 8.
  • up at 5.15/30, toilet, change walk and feed dog, take bike out, eat some toast. leave the house at 6.50. ride 20 miles to work, just before 8am. log in to computer, shower and get on with a days work.

Leave the house anytime between 7.30 and 8.30, out of bed 15 minutes beforehand. Shower and breakfast at work. It's only a 30-35 minutes commute depending on the traffic, but we have flexible working hours, so the earlier I'm in the earlier I can leave (or build up hours for one of my 41 days leave a year).

For all those that get up before 6am - do you all look like this?!

  • Surf-Mat,

The simple answer is, there's no reflection when I view my mirror, getting up well before dawn makes me a creature of the night.
