Our club has been around for 84 years and for the first time in most of those years we are in danger of not running a 10 championship next year because we can't find a timekeeper for the events.
Does anyone have any bright ideas where they can be found or have any of your clubs overcome this difficulty in some creative way? (I know - look under rocks etc)
The biggest problem we have is that the start and finish of the event are not in the same place (either side of a duel carriageway) and so the bloke who has volunteered to run the event, start/push off etc. can't get to the end in time...

Everyone has to volunteer for at least one event. That way, everyone helps out once in the season, and if you're keeping points, everyone's disadvantaged in the same way (missing one race). Get the members to help and it all gets easier.

If it's a club event, do you have to use a CTT approved timekeeper, or can anyone with a decent stopwatch do the job?

Require all members to help at at least 2 races during the year otherwise they aren't
eligible to race or win anything. Our club, here in the states, races every Thursday night
9 months out of the year. We always have at least 4 members helping as course marshall's(corners, start finish, etc.). Our web site www.freewheel.com (Maumee
Valley Wheelmen) may be of some help to you as it shows how we run our races.

Yeah our club rules are you have to marshall at two events. And still some of the f**wits let us down....

I think you need a timekeeper as approved by the District though - we always used the same guys. Do you have a rep on the Committee or someone who at least attends their meetings ?

It's a typical club situation, our club came close to having no organiser this year, you get to hear/say a lot of excuses! Eventually someone will hopefully put their hand up. Can you be the timekeeper?!!

Alternately ask poeple to take turns, beg etc.
You live and learn. At any rate, you live
  • It has to be a case of taking turns - you can't expect someone to put do it every week - it's not as if it's much of a commitment.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
