Can anyone recommend any volunteering projects/organisations that run operations abroad? Or ones to avoid.

Good friends of mine has been, and will be again, working with VSO out in Nepal in schooling and minority groups (via http://www.bds.org.np/).

They did quite a lot of background work trying to find the most suitable volunteer organisation and plumped for VSO.
