Can anyone recommend an Autumn weight jersey similar to the Assos Intermediate jersey so that it incorporates a windproof panel at the front ? The Assos one would do the job but I find the styling dull and the price too high.

    Gilet ?
  • Have a Gilet. Nothing fancy but don't find it too breathable. I have the Assos Element One winter jacket and I do like the breathability and wind protection it provides. A Gilet that was a bit more breathable would be a good alternative. Any suggestions ?

The Assos Element One is very nice, had one for a couple of years now, and imo nicer than the Intermediate. I certainly have never been cold riding mine.

Anyone want to explain how something can be both windproof and breathable?

Ermmmm - not sure - but that seems to work.
  • Numerous products highlight the characteristics of being windproof and breathable. They are out there so unless they are being allowed to advertise a claim that is not true this technology does exist. Gore-tex has been around for ages.
  • Watch out for the effect of relative humidity and /or a layer of water on your 'breathable'.
If the humidity outside the garment is higher than in (say after a summer rainstorm followed by hot sunshine, your sweaty heat won't get out.
Likewise if your garment has not shed its layer of water through beading and runoff (ie if the coating is worn or dirty) then, again, it won't 'breathe'.
    This includes Goretex.

Paramo Vasco is supposed to be 'multi activity' including cycling.

    Anyone tried it?
  • That looks a nice piece of kit. It makes Raph stuff look cheap tho'....

I had a paramo walking jacket - loved it, but pretty bulky and theyd need to lighten it up a lot before you could do sport in it.
  • I got one from Decathlon. It has a windproof front and removable windproof arms. I find it makes a huge difference in terms of keeping warm in the wind.

    Costs about £40
  • I have the Assos Intermediate jersey, Its just a normal jersey. Has a small bit of leatherette at the front and the rest is thick lycra type stuff. Any long sleeve jersey would be much the same, Add a gillet if its abit cool.
  • Personally I've always survived Autumn with a normal jersey plus arm warmers and gilet if needs be. But then I live in the 'sunny' South East ...

(Up North I hear they make do with a t-shirt with with a packet of fags stuffed up the sleeve :D )

I have a couple of Altura jerseys/jackets that are very good. They aren't expensive and are usually available with reductions from somewhere. I can't remember the names of the 2 versions I have (and the inner printed labels have washed off) but they both have a wind proof front section with more breathability at the back and the back of the sleeves. They've become my year round jacket this year as the summer has been so bad.

De Marchi Leggara long sleeve with a De Marchi wind stop base layer underneath. Very much reduced in cost I think due to Zyro not doing that brand any more.

I've been wearing a thin base layer underneath my normal short sleeve jersey. I've been just about right temp wise and I'm not getting sweaty either...

    Might be an option ?

I'm not quite sure what season we're talking about here. For autumn I normally wear a short sleeve base layer (my favourite being a Howies Merino one) under my short sleeve top, with arm warmers if need be. If it gets a bit colder maybe a long sleeve thermal. Anything thicker only comes out after I'm in my 3/4 bottoms.

If you do want a proper windproof fronted jacket, I use an Endura Windtex jacket when it's colder, though I'd call it a winter jacket, as I never go to anything more. Windproof front, but not the back so it breathes better than something that's fully windproof. Also has big pit zips for extra ventilation. Really don't understand the obsession with Assos stuff on here and the unwillingness to admit that you can get kit which is at least 90% as good for half the money.

I've got a few bits of Castelli, and it's some of the worst made kit I've seen, even though I like the design. Not got any of their jackets though - what's the quality like?

 Really - I've got plenty of their stuff (Rosso Corsa range) and it is the mutts nuts. Solo Jacket is fab, thin, windproof and warm. Perfect for the Autumn although I use mine all year round.
