I did my first 100km ride a few weeks ago. Had not been riding as much as usual beforehand.

It went like this..

Breakfast bowl of porridge 1 hr before the ride.

First 25Kms feeling strong and did a tough stint into the wind at the front, just before the hills arrived.

I was daft and did not eat or drink properly.

I did drink 1 litre water first 2 hrs and ate a gel at the start of the hills. The hills clobbered me.

Stopped for water and banana at 50kms.

Feeling relatively good and riding ok but ran out of water at 75kms.

90KMS BANG HIT THE WALL I was riding toward the front of the Peloton and just felt the energy rush away from me. I have never felt anyting like it in my life. I dropped off the Peloton and could bailry manage 20km/hr. It was just awful. I was 10km from home and just had to keep going. If I could have got off and thrown the bike away I think I almost would.

But as we cyclists are a competitive lot now I have a personal challenge and I am armed with a little experience I won't forget.

NEXT time it will be water with carbs Staminade or Powerade? and a gel every half hour. I won't be treating 100kms like the social 50km ride on a Saturday, and even that will be ridden differently.

I am even going to tackle the Tour Down Under participation ride 143kms 40degC in Jan 2009 in Adelaide. So anyone have any training suggestions/ride plans I'd be glad to hear them.

Cheers

Ditto Ditto. Of course, if you're from WA then this is probably suck eggs stuff....But being from Brisbane myself, I would suggest paying very, very careful attention to how much you drink, as you will need in 40C heat to consume significant quantities of liquid to stay hydrated for 4-5 hours. Whatever you normally drink will not even be close enough at the kind of temperature.

I'd suggest some research before you take part in the event, take advantages of any and all water stops, and maybe think about carrying extra with you, maybe get a bottle bracket fixed to your seat and use it. If you get affected by heat exhaustion you could be in big trouble, and end up hospitalised.
'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze....

Just be grateful you're not English, you'd have had to do 100 MILES.
