it'll never happen to me......

Having read many a post about fellow riders having crashes, being knocked off bikes, injuring themselves, I was quite happily sticking to the minset that it would never happen to me.
Sadly after umming and argghing about commuting into work this morning due to the weather warning, and deciding that I would ride as normal as i was hardcore...turns out i'm not.
Having completed 5.49 miles of my 5.5 mile commute i decided to get a wobble on going round the corner into the work carpark (with no one anywhere near me), hit a drain in a puddle and hammer myself into the ground shoulder 1st. Obviously being a proud man i jumped up, picked the bike up, made sure no one saw me, twisted the handle bars back, grumbled at my broken lever and pushed on to the bikeshed.......it was then the pain kicked in, the strange lump on my shoulder appeared, and I realised maybe i didn't get away with it
a trip to the BRI,2 lots of strong painkillers, a sling,a a broken clavicle later, i am now sat at home typing one handed feeling like a right muppet. 12 hours down the line and i'm soooooo frustrated and bored...when can i get out riding??????
any ideas on what to amuse myself with for the next few weeks, so far i am thinking about being incredably unproductive and getting into the "west wing" starting at the beggining.
Other thoughts include drinking copious amounts of milk to try get the bones fixing faster

Bad luck mate - it's amazing how an innoucuous little off can cause such damage.
You can amuse yourself for a while by reading this thread!

That's a bummer, get well soon. I have to say that fear of this sort of thing is one of the reasons I try to avoid riding in bad weather.
According to 'Bicycling Medicine' by Arni Baker, you could be off the bike for 2-6 weeks. However, he mentions that use of a turbo may be OK within 48hrs if you keep the weight off the arms.
Having said that, I don't have any personal knowledge of such an injury.
Good luck.0
