OK, I'm picking up a new bike and I've some money to throw at it... It's coming with Truvativ Stylos cranks but I want something to take on long and knarly XC and I'll be developing my skill(z) at Whistler. How good is the stylos and is it worth changing to XTR - used by DH and XC boys alike?

not worth changing a thing untill the fitted kit needs replacing."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I'm more concerned that the stylos will break being an XC crank when the XTR is proven on all terrain, Is the stylos up for some abuse or is it going to crack when I visit DH courses - though I'm no DH racer.0

What bike is it you've bought? If the rest of the bike is up for DH and it's specced with Stylos I'd assume so :P
Which Stylo is it anyway? I wouldn't worry too much Stylos are fairly strong for XC/Trail bits, very similar to XTR I bet (unless it's the carbon one :P ).0 -
My mates stylo's have fallen apart twice in the last 2 weeks .....0

Intense 5.5. I' currently selling my 5.5 and moving to America and buying a fresh 5.5 out there. It's actually better specked than mine and i'll making a profit out of the change over! I'll be in Seattle in a weeks time and I intend to be doing both Whistler and the rockies. I've read a few reviews saying that Stylos falls apart - these ones are the GXPs which BR seems to review as being alright. But with the saved money - I can well afford to go XTR but only because I don't want to embarrase myself by snapping by cranks! So ar stylose tough or shit?0

Bluechair - on the other hand my Stylo is still going strong with 2500 hard miles on it - in fact it's not needed ANY looking after (apart from cleaning) and is lasting better than my LX Hollowtech 2 which I thought would be stronger.
And yes, mine is GXP but at 12ish stone, I'm not the heaviest rider out there - give it a chance - they also look cool which helps 8)0 -
Will you be getting the XTR at a discount by trading in the new Stylo with the bike shop?
If so, it's probably the best time to upgrade.0 -
I say again...
Fallen apart how? Not, "What brand was his frame?".
If you mean his cranks fell off, his chain got sucked in and fell off, his bottom bracket seized, his chain snapped etc this has nothing to do with his cranks.
Unless his cranks are physically falling in half and launching him I'm not sure what you mean. Some bike shops (not just Halfords) can be a bit iffy on tightening crank bolts up, it's not rare them falling off on their first ride or two out of the shop. Not good I know.0 -
I'm plotting on getting an XTR crank if mine goes - but it simply refuses to break or even creak!0

What about this? http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=1339&categoryId=12 A pretty amazing deal given the RRP is £480.
EDIT: Just noticed it's out of stock, you can get the XTR for £200 though and maybe look at the Truvativ Noir Carbon for £165.0
