Let me run this by you; building a cut-down bike

I have a Brompton sized foldup bike (a Strida),

but I've realised that I can probably use something nicer to ride but with a few alterations and still fit it in my campervan.

So here's the plan:

- slightly smaller than average wheels if I can find some with slicks to match
- quick release front wheel but fixed rear, take the front one off and hang it up on a big hook by the wheel
- single speed for durability, one brake, possibly front or just rear and freewheel
- a pannier on the rear

Regards the frame I want something small. What about using a jump frame to save space?

I want this thing to be small and as light as I possibly can yet fast on the road yet able to handle stony lanes.

The frame is the big question. I want something acting like an Aluminum race bike frame yet I want it smaller than that. What are the alternatives? Price has to have a limit because I want to be able to lock it and leave it.

Regards locks I'm looking for a cable lock again. I liked the way my last one has a rubber outer shell. That way you can see where they've tried to cut through it and not lock it up there again!

Or alternatively, what about trying to turn a BMX into something a lot faster?

You know that the frame size is pretty much dependent on you and your size, right? There's less than no point in building a tiny bike that's too small for you as you won't be able to ride it! No matter how much you shrink the wheels or bars, the basic shape of the rider can't be messed with too much, and you can't shorten your own legs or reach. Be careful.

Also, couldn't you fit a full size road bike in a campervan?
  • legally (this may not bother u ofc) if u going freewheel u must have a front and rear brake, only a fixie can have 1 brake as the drivetrain is a brake system in itself
    Good Luck and Be Fecund
