Hi everyone

I have an Izumi gold chain on me bike and i want to break it, remove a few links and connect it up again.

My knees are a bit sore from pushing a 53t chainring and i want to put a smaller one on there.

Having never done any chain work before, and needing to buy a link remover thing, i was wondering whether Izumi chains work the same as other ones or whether i need a special tool? I see that Izumi chains for sale on ebay feature a 'linking pin'. Is it this one i need to push out? How do i identify it? Any recs on a chain tool?

ANy help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wil

it depends which izumi you got. the more expensive one has a pin you have to unscrew, the link looks different. then the link comes out. i found it a messy and annoying solution.

if you have a cheaper one i think it's a straight forward split with a chaintool. some multitools have a rivet popper on there, but these aren't so good for eighth chains. i recommend shedding out the 6 or so pounds on a decent splitter. by decent, i guess anything that feels solid. parktools obviously is well engineered, but don't try any of these on a half link chain, not that you have one.
  • The Cracker from HubJub is pricey but a cracking (sorry!) bit of kit. http://www.hubjub.co.uk/etc/etc.htm#cc
  • Thanks for the responses guys. I went to work last night and split the chain....too short, so i had to try and push the rivet back in again and of course i had popped it out rather than leaving it in the outerplate. One minor domestic and an hour and a half later, i got the rivet back in and split the chain in the correct place. Izumi do have a linking section that unclips and separates for maintence etc.

    Anyway, cheers.
