2nd Bike, What type?

Hi,
I have the option of joining the bike to work scheme. Currently I have a Look Road bike, Due to the expanding family and new job, i'm looking for a new bike.
The dilema is what type, my current bike is suitable for the summer solo riding, but I need something that can commute all winter, 30 miles dark country lanes, something that would be suitable with a child seat on the back for weekend family rides, but also it needs to be fun?
Any ideas or suggestions around the £300 mark?
Thanks

...a few suggestions...I ride the Scott for my 22mile round trip commute...country lanes and bridle ways and tracks. It's a bit heavy but does the job......all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...0 -
Is the road surface bad? I'd want to commute on as light and fast a bike as possible - if the surface ain't great I wonder if there's a cyclocross-type bike that fulfills all your requirements (guess the child seat issue might be a tricky one)?0

Mainly commuting, but I have my road bike for speed, I'd want something for country lane winter commuting, that I could maybe take off road aswell, the best of both worlds. Looking at it I acn rule out the full sus mountain bike which would seemingly be no good for a 30 mile commute?0

I normally ride my Giant SCR2 into work, but I also have an Orange P7. I am taking the P7 to Norfolk this evening to cram some riding in whilst I am at my parents, so rode it in to work this morning - compared to the Giant, it was a LOT of effort. And my commute is only 6miles! I would probably die from exhaustion on a full suspension MTB!0 -
Halford's Carrera Vulcan with semi slick tyres for commuting and MTB tyres for going off road when 'fun' riding.

could there be any other choice http://www.pearsoncycles.co.uk/page/114/BoweryRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.

I'll soon be using my Specialized Hardrock pro for my commute of 6 miles ( from my summer Trek commute ).
If you're going to be using a child seat you will need decent width tyres, a hardtail with road tyres would be ideal , tyres of a minimum 1.5" should squash the conkers and broken branches, it depends on your fitness levels though.
