Anyone have any decent routes from Wilmslow way into the city centre. I do Holmes Chapel – Wilmslow at the moment, and prior to that did Holmes Chapel – Didsbury.

Office moving to city centre. Wondering what the best bike route is..

    Avoid the A34 , it's a death trap.

How about , head into gatley , ( maybe via Styal road ) into Northenden, then straight through Northenden , Rusholme into the city centre .

I know for a fact a number of cyclists have complained about the A34 to Manchester council asking them to take action, but it wont happen.

Of course ... you could always get the train from Wilmslow

    or ..........................

    " Regional Cycle Route 85

From Wilmslow the route runs from Manchester Airport through Painswick Park, north towards Wythenshawe Park and on to the Mersey Valley, crossing the Trans Pennine Trail National Cycle Route 62 at Princess Road. The route then continues to Barlow Moor Road and follows Princess Road on a signed shared facility to Mauldeth Road West where it meets National Cycle Route 6. "

You can get a map from Manc Town Hall . It's the long way round and probably isn't suitable.

Wilmslow - Head for Cheadle, take Manchester Road to Parrs Wood, then Parrs Wood Road and turn off on Royal St, then right along Mosley Road to the old A34 - i.e. the single lane one from Levenshulme - bit hectic at Levenshulme with standing traffic, but it is soon a breeze and takes you along the back of the Hospitals and Uni's. You'll need to hop on the bottom end of Oxford Road past Manchester Met and the BBC, before hitting the city centre.

I work in Didsbury, but ride into the Uni's fairly regular. Parrs wood road is pretty good and fairly traffic free !

Andy Manc - that route is fine until you get to Fallowfield - Wilmslow Road/Oxford Road - it's Europe's biggest bus route....blooming awful - too many busses and far too many stupid student's jumping lights, cutting up busses...aviod. At Fallowfield Wilbram Road/Mosley Road, turn left down Wilbram Road and take Lloyd Street (upper Lloyd Street). Follow that down, and it takes you past Man Uni and Manchester Met - Same as before, you'll need to nip onto Oxford Road at the bottom.

That's another route I would use too, or even use Parrs wood road, then turn left down Mosley Road and down to Lloyd Street,

Fossyant , I use that route every weekend , the cycle lanes are falling apart, the nutters driving the 'Magic Buses' need shooting , but .... BikeDoctor is on the route , and the view ( of freshley baked students ) can be interesting .

The A34 ( kingsway ) must be avoided at all costs .

Here's a topic you may find interesting ... on another *cough * forum .

Ah but do you use Wilmslow Road at rush hour when the students are back - I do (on the bus) - crazy - the view may be good, but you won't last too long on it ! :?

A5103 Princess parkway in and Oxford rd/ Burton home. Only in West Dids though.
  • thanks a lot of all your efforts and advice. We move in a couple of weeks. I'll have wizz around the routes and maybe post me thoughts.

Or, of course I'll just get train.

Daft really.. Alderleyt edge to holmes chaple country lanes. Yet when riding from dids in winter it was safer to get miles in riding just the dids to alderley stretch with traffic then bailing onto the train. Pitch black wide country roads with cars doing 80mph a bit hairy.

i have fond memories (sarcasm) of my 1 trip down Princess Parkway heading to Wythenshaw (it looked the most direct way on the map lol)... from tootling along in the left lane of a fairly busy 2 laneroad i suddenly found myself with 2 more lanes on my left-hand side and cars tearing past me :O

erm no :) where the "slip" road from the M60 joins it becomes 4 lanes wide.

Naughty. There is a sign saying cyclists are forbidden from going along that part. There is a path for cyclists that runs parallel, you go up the motorway slip road for the M60 in the buslane and then peel off under a glass strewn bridge and come out by the Brittania hotel in Northenden.
  • i wish i had seen it - this was about 6 years back. :)

  • If you take one of the suggestions that brought you through northenden/didsbury I think this is much nicer:

    http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/We ... IST-Campus

following the route of the 111 up burton rd, yew tree road so miss the bus traffic on wilmslow road and general mayhem in rusholme.

The 111 is the only bus, but once you get passed 1 you usually don't see another.

A few traffic lights, but you get them everywhere!
