Team training and Heart Rate Monitors

Hi,
A friend and I are training for the Cape Epic in March 2009. Important background info - we're total mountain bike newbies, so his is all new to us.
I am looking for a heart rate monitor solution that will:
1. help us train as individuals
2. allow us to compare our relative/team progress
3. give us GPS funcationality.
I have been using a Suunto t6 for a couple of years, which I think is pretty good. But the software is dodgy at best. I am thinking about a Garmin 705, but I would then lose the useful Suunto EPOC measurements.
How does Polar stack up? what would you use and why? finally, any downloadable software you'd reccomend?
See my Cape Epic blog if you have any other useful thoughts.
Thanks
Charlie

I like my Garmin.. I have a 305. Useful little gadget, you can race against previous 'laps' and against others laps so will be fun for team progress. The software that comes with it is not up to much but the on-line motion based software is pretty cool.0

I've recently posted about the 305 here http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12585063
You do get the Garmin Training Center (which does seem a little outdated), but very good for stats.0 -
the only problem I have with my 305 is that you cannot upload road maps to it (let alone have it route find for you)
Apart from that it is ace, though I am not quite sure what I am going to do with all the data0
