Hi
New to the forum and to road bikes, taken it up for fitness, but can't believe it has taken me this long to see the light, have always used my MTB with road tyres, but the proper road bike makes the trip loads easier.

I have been given a road bike (lets call it a retro bike) it is maybe 15 years old, it has Campag gearing (nuovo record on rear), cranks etc. So you can get an idea that it was not a Halfords special. I am trying to identify the frame, it has been repainted and I know it could possibly be anything, even a one off build. But hoping someone out there knows the markings. It is made of lightwieght steel tubing

Spoken to a friend (who's a full on road/trails racer) he cannot tell the brand, but says with the strengtheners at the rear of the seat post bracket, to the tubes that hold the rear brake that it is a 'layback, frame?

the most distinguishing marking is on the down tube (goes from the headtube to the bottom bracket) the gearlever stay (stops the gearlevers slipping down the tube) there is a triangle (tapers towards the bottom bracket) inside this triangle is the playing card suits - in this order spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds - these are cut into the metal triangle. Be great if it was a colnago as I see they have the 'clubs' emblem - but thats dreaming I suppose.

Hope someone can help. Have put pics below, second one is on the joint between the same tube mentioned above and the headtube.

looks like a frame much older than 15 years, I would be guessing in the 25 plus bracket, A couple of wider shots may help the 'experts' often the overall geometry, the type of ends and lug-work will hend afficiandos tell the maker.

I'd suggest you post this in "Special Interests" as well - plenty of knowledgeable peeps in there who specialise in refurbing old bikes so they may have an idea
  • Many thanks for the replies, did some deeper investigation yesterday, it turns out ot be a 'J F Wilson' frame, local firm here in Sheffield. :D

Can feel a winter project coming on - getting the paint off and getting it coated!
