iPhone 3G

I'm probably going to buy an iPhone 3G at the weekend, as a replacement for my N95 (which i broke  ).

I have 2 concerns really...

1. Are there any maps that you can load onto the phone? Rather than using google maps (and the data usage associated with that). To me, this appears quite a limitation. If you're abroad for example.

2. Is there something similiar to Nokia Sportstracker available (or likely to be soon)?

Any cool cycling specific features on the iPhone?

These are the two things that I think are quite big advantages in favour of the Nokias... But, they're pretty cool though aren't they? And a new gadget is always more fun!

Any info would be much appreciated!

    Hmmm. I have one.

If I were you I'd be concerned about the battery life. I'm having to charge mine pretty much every day and don't do too much with it.

The only cycling specific thing I've found so far is a nifty gears calculator application.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.
  • The battery life doesn't concern me too much, i had to charge my N95 every other day, and I have loads of ipod docks dotted around to charge them (i know they're not supposed to work, but they seem to with the one i played with last night!)

  • I dont have an iphone (I hate Crapple) but during a courtesy call from Voda I had a whinge about the battery life of my phone and they suggested that if I dont make use of 3g then disable it, which I did and I now get I would say nearly double the battery life.

I would love to get one of these but think the actual size of the phone is a bit of a hassle.
  • For those with an iPhone, i've found the following...

    http://www.joesonic.com/blog/2008/04/14 ... or-iphone/

Which should let you download the maps

    and...

    http://pathtracks.com/

Which looks like a basic version of sportstracker, i.e. tracks your route, and elevation etc etc

If anyone gives them a go, keep us informed!

Looks like you'll need to jailbreak your phone to install the googlemaps. Pathtracks is a dowloadable app from the istore so not a problem.
  • Why are you worried about data usage (abroad yes I get it) but in the UK it is irrelevant. For me this is the great joy of the iPhone - unlimited data, plus it is a joy to use. I tried an N95 and found it to be clunky clunky. Best phone ever by such a long way. My boss just bought one and despite being a total luddite he loves it.

The abroad bit is the major thing, plus the "unlimited data usage" atually has an "excessive usage policy" of 250mb i think.

    250mb per day or month???
  • per month, I could be wrong...

It hasn't been an issue for anyone else I know that already has an iPhone, so i imagine if it is the case, then they're not too strict about it
