Orange 5 bash setup

Hi, I'm new to the forum and came across it as I've been trawling the internet for days trying to solve a problem.
I've just fitted a 22/36T/bash setup to my 2007 Orange 5 S. The problem is the chain gets caught at the swing arm pivot during changes. There is some info on the Orange website, that I found after the fact, that states that you cant run bigger than 32T middle without this problem.
However, I think the 2008 Orange 5 AM comes with a 36T bigger ring. :?
So how do they get round the problem, anybody know?

Cheers, Sean

  • My 5 AM came with a 32T middle ring. I'm now running 26T, 36T and bash ring no bother.

Maybe the front of the swingarm is narrower or the pivot caps and bolts are lower profile on the newer bikes?

If the later, could you retro-fit these to your bike?

Could you put an extra spacer between the frame and bb cup on the drive side, even if it means one less on the non-drive side?

I've a 73mm external bearing bb in the 68mm bb shell. 1 spacer on the non-drive side. Dual chain device plate and a spacer outside of this on the drive side ( equivelent to 2 spacers drive side).

    Hope this helps :D

  • Thanks. There must have been changes between the 2007 5 S/SE/Pro and the 2008 5 AM coz my bb shell is 73mm. The swing arm must have a lower/slimmer profile at the pivot. I've got the number for someone techy at Orange now so will give them a call and find out for defo.

I was wrong. Just measured my '08 frame which has a 73mm bb also. Sorry Sean

Tried using no spacers or guide plate then the guide plate on its own. Both resulted in the chain not being able to get past the swingarm. The pivot and bolts are not in the way.

Now have no spacers non drive side and same as before drive side (guide plate and spacer).

This seems to work fine. No problems with chain line.

I'm wondering if the extra spacers will cause the seals on the bb's tube to not sit right on the cups, letting moisture in from inside the frame?

    Any ideas / views? :?

  • HF, spoke to Paul at Orange today. He confirmed that the 2008 5 AM is supplied with a 32T bigger ring. He said that you could try using 2 spacers (or spacer + guide plate) to get a 36T to fit but it would be using the chain at its limits. Using 3 spacers would not allow enough axle length for the pinch bolts to hold the non drive side properly.
I've tried 2 spacer spacers but my chain looks very diagonal when on big 36T chainring & any gear top half of the cassette. I suspect that your guide plate helps with this but I dont have one.
Just put the 32T ring back on for now till I decide what to do next.

    Thanks for checking again.
