Returning to biking after 12 years

Hi,

I used to cycle everywhere when I was younger after owning my first mountain bike, a Giant Granite.

Since I turned 18 I have always driven everywhere and got rid of the bike. I have now decided that i want to get back into cycling for a bit of fun and general fitness. I will be doing road riding, canal tow path riding and some cross country, although nothing to extreme until my fitness level gets up

I was looking at a felt Q520, after visiting Pempury Cycles Superstore in Bristol to test ride it, I found it a nice bike to ride.

However the sales guy there then showed a 2007 Merida Sub 60d, it cost a little more but after the ride I decided this was more comfortable to ride. They had this model reduced to £400 which was right on my limit (They did have the '08 model but was £500)

I was wondering if some more knowledgeable people than myself could offer some advise on the 2007 Sub 60. I did read the review on here where it got 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Thanks guys
Dave

Got a good review - maybe a little overpriced at £520, but at £400 has some good parts. And much better than the Felt.

If you have tried and like the Merida, I'd go for it!

A similar position to myself DT. Used to do a lot of cycling. Think nothing of throwing the bike on the roof of the car, tent in the boot and heading off to the lakes for the weekend. Other things get in the way, Marriage, children, work etc, and my biking days disappeared into fun memories. Still got my a old Raleigh bike, and started getting out on it again a while back, but soon realised the technology of a 15yr old bike was holding me back. So after some arm twisting of the wife and this that and the other i'm on my way to new bike!! Cant wait

  • Well put a deposit down on the Sub 60 earlier in the week. I go in tomorrow to pick it up. I can wait to get out riding it :D

If there is anyone local to Bristol I have been given a 10% off voucher from Pembury cycles

  • Just got back from my first ride in 12 years. Bearing in mind I have not really done any form of exercise in this time.

Really liked the ride of the Sub 60d. Although after getting back from a 10 miler Im wasted and think I will be aching a bit in the morning.

Had a really annoying problem after less than a mile whereby the front disc brake was making an awful squeaking noise. It stopped when you gently pulled the brake leaver a bit, I wasn't going to ride the whole loop doing this though.

After numerous stops to adjust I finally got it to stop, although now the brake leaver has to be pulled a lot further before full the brakes respond, will have to have a little bit more of a play or failing that take it back to Pembury Cycles to get adjusted.

The route I took was from my home town Melksham, up to the village of Lacock through the village towards Chippenham, and then round the back of Lacock back to Melksham, quite a few gentle hills on the route which really highlighted how unfit I was :(
