Extra tube protection

Evening all.
I've heard/read about cutting an inner tube in half and putting it inbetween the tyre and tube for extra protection. Just wondering if anybody did this and what their thoughts/experience with it are.
Cheers

Reason I ask is that I'm thinking of putting Continental Speed King Supersonics on my bike, seem like a really good tyre but fragile.
Anybody have any experience of them?
Cheers
I'dd see how you get on with them with standard tubes.

Will fit them when I get punctures next, they seem very light so I can't see that being a problem in reality (although I know theoretically you don't want more weight on the outside of the wheel).
They seem quite tough, I'm sure it won't be a perfect solution but I bet they will be better than nothing.
thanks.
