Newbie Help Please - maintenance and keeping road worthy

Hi - I have just bought two bikes - specialized rockhopper comp 08 and specialized myka pro (for my wife). The last mountain bike I bought in 1989 second hand with a flexihead and CrMo Coyote frame. Things have changed a bit and I never even bothered to clean or service that bike. So it is in bad shape with play in the bit that the pedals attach to, the steering is stiff and does not like to turn and you can only use a couple of gears.... but it carried on working all this time!
This time I am determined how to look after these bikes and keep them in good condition. Can someone give me some tips of what I need to do to these bikes and when. Even though I have always had a bike I have never done anything apart repair punctures and I am not sure what bits are called. So please explain any term that you use or perhaps there is a diagram on the Internet?
Cheers

I'd get hold of a book like Zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance, good clear instructions, and diagrams.
A modest investment in some decent allen keys and a couple of other basic tools would be a good idea, if you don't already have them.0 -
but before buying a book check out the parktools website.
link below."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for tips... just had the bike locks delivered. It seems ironic that the lighter your bike the heaver the chain and lock :?0

download as many parts manuals for all the kit on your bikes as you can, that's if they did'nt come in printed form with the bikes. a torque wrench is great i think too for making sure all those little bolts are torqued to what they should be, something like this,
