Cycling Through the City Centre

Are there any laws (written or unwritten) regarding cycling through the city centre? (ie the pedestrianised bit)

I ask because some people seem to fly through the pedestrians while others (myself included at the moment) get off and walk through.

I think its quite risky cycling through roads of the city centre as pedestrians seem to cross oblivious to bikes (unless they are cycling alongside a car), so i can't imagine the pedestrianised portion of town to be any different!

It'll depend on the particular road order for those streets, but there should be signage to indicate which types of traffic are allowed. If it says "Pedestrians Only" or something you're probably out of luck.
Today is a good day to ride

Generally, if an area has no traffic and is full of pedestrians I'd steer clear as it'll only exacerbate the old "all cyclists are pavment jumping nutjobs blah blah blah"

Totally steer clear unless it's specifically and clearly marked as being for cyclists as well.
  • i personally hate cycling through the city centre, its too busy with stupid one way systems and pedestrians everywhere
  • Cool, thats what i've been doing.... i guess the people that just fly through on there bikes are in the wrong then

    thanks
  • Which city?

Most likely there will be a bye law that says you can't ride after a certain time in the morning. Here it's 9:30. Sensible, but I got told off by a community support officer for cycling at 9:35.
  • Lol!

Leeds, i'm not cycling around the whole city centre loop road, so i cut through the centre, just takes me a while as i have to walk
  • Gah Leeds at 8:30 must be bad. Loop for us and we do nip to the Angle Inn via the walking streets but usually at after 9pm.

I think strictly its all no cycling though from HMV to Boar lane and across to the market.

Try the loop for fun.. cos they designed it so that once you get a green, all the rest are in sequence so you never hit another red...

PS depends where you're going of course but you are allowed to cycle on the bus lanes on The Headrow/Eastgate then Victoria St/ New Market Street and also Boar Lane

as i am from leeds i have been through the city centre many times on a bike, the city centre route is terable on a bike in the morning you have to be aware of all cars and buses, but in leeds i wouldnt think about using the public walkways and cycling on them, too busy, but i think you can cycle on them cos cars go down them for deliveries and stuff

If theres space you can jog. I do with the bike, but if its too crowded I still walk
