Better ride for on road and off road

Just struggling to decide right size between 15 and 17 size for Rockhopper Disc. I was told by the sales staff that I should go for Rockhopper 17 if I use normal road ride but at the other shop I was advised to get 15 size. I am 5'6ish tall.

But what the two shops are saying is basically correct. BUT if you are mainly on tarmac and commuting i would not be suggesting a Rockhopper.
