Marin Kentfield FS - a good starting point?

I wonder if someone can help me?
I want to buy my first bike for general weekend cycling and riding around the paths of local parks. The local shop have recommended the Marin Kentfield FS for me and my wife (£329 and £299 respectively).
For someone with zero experience of bikes it is proving difficult to research whether this advice is right or whether it is just because they happen to sell this make.
Do you think this would be a good buy or maybe there is something else out there of better quality/value in this rough price range? Any advice would be really appreciated.
Cheers.

For paths, town and country riding in comfort, then I agree that the style of bike suggested is a good one, a hybrid. However Marin's tend to be really poor value with the budget range, with some nasty parts fitted.
Take a look at the Giant CRS series:

See if a local dealer has any, and have a test.0 -
Cheers - that's very helpful, I'll do that0
