Hi there boys and girls, a first post from me. I am just getting into road biking properly. Previously I have borrowed other friend's bikes to take out. As I'm trying to take this seriously and want to get fit, I am looking at investing in a nice road bike.

Being a beginner and not having a clue what all the terminology means and having done countless searches on google et al I am a bit lost as to what things mean.

I am looking at getting a Cannondale Caad9 105 bike. Having looked around at the various models, there are various 105 models available. Some are triples, some are doubles. I think I have worked out what these terms mean but what I can't fathom is what is a Compact?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • A "compact" describes a double chain-set which in some cases saves the loss of face associated with having to use a triple. 8)
For a Roadman, who is now just a bit over the hill, this is an absolute must and this goes a long way to explaining their popularity.
  • Thanks for clearing that up for me
