Hi guys, finally got round to ordering my new (first roadie), its a willier mortirolo.
2 questions though
first, does anyone know of any clubs close to southampton, ive looked on the net but cant really find anything.
second, can anyone recommend a good pair of shoes and pedals or is it just a case of try some on which are in my budget?
Cheers

I can recommend Time Atac pedals if you want the ability to walk in them when off the bike. If not, speedplay is a great road pedal system with lots of float (good for the knees).
No doubt you'll be familiar with Look & shimano SPD pedals pretty soon... but I think there are better systems out there.
As far as the shoes are concerned, go with what's comfortable.0 -
There was a club in Portsmouth a few years back when I watched Le tour in Le Harve. As to the name etc, can't help sorry. Or wether it is still in existance.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

As for the shoes & pedals: I moved from mountain to road a few years back and decided to go the whole hog with Look pedals and Sidi shoes. Both of which I found disappointing coming from spds and Specialized shoes.
The standard Look pedals are heavy, and the cleats wear out quick - and all of mine squeeked. The Sidi shoes are real works of art, but the tightening/loosening gizmo (for when your feet get hot and swell up) didn't work at all effectively.
You'll get zero cred from other roadies, but I'd go for whatever you're happy with on your mtb.0 -
Don't mess around get a set of Shimano shoes and pedals0

Go and pay a visit to Dave Harding in Obelisk Road in Woolston! I'm pretty sure he will point you in the direction of a local club or two and sort out your shoes/pedals at the same time.

There are two main clubs in Southampton, Sotonia is possibly the largest on the south coast and their web site is here:- http://www.sotonia.co.uk/
DHC is more of a racing team run by Dave H who owns DH cycle sports
Both clubs do mix and DHC people do go to sotonia time trails and Sunday runs. The gear changing, helmet wearing fule.

I would strongly recommend the Time RXS carbon pedals which I have recently fitted to my new Viner Magnifica (awesome bike by the way!!). The pedals are excellent for people like me who have had a few problems with knee pain on longer rides - they have about 10 degree of float and they are so easy to get out of. I had Shimano Ultegra pedals on my last bike and I have been very disappointed with them due to the lack of float needed for me. Its all personal, but I can say the Time pedals have been an absolute revelation!
On the shoes front, I have some fairly standard Shimano R075 SPD-SL. I cannot really fault them and they were not expensive (£45). With three straps they do the trick of keeping your feet in place.
Good luck!0 -
I'm not really to bothered about being able to walk in the shoes, im buying them for cycling so i only want them to cycle in. Is it worth paying the extra bit of dollar for the shimano then?
Thanks for that boybiker, it really helped0 -
