How to tweak a MTB for road use?

Apart from changing to slicker tyres what else can I do to make my MTB better on roads. I sometimes go forty miles on it exploring. I notice I come to a dead stop on hills as the suspension forks want to drive into the hill rather than stay parallel to it. Are there forks you can lock out when you're on-road?
Cycling, it has it's ups and downs.

Yes, many forks come equipped with a lockout feature nowadays. Even better would be a rigid fork - will save a massive chunk of weight, but not practical to keep swapping forks!

Bar ends a worthy addition for extra hand positions. Also flipping the stem to give a longer lower riding position.

meh, I've never found forks to be an issue, I've tried the lockout, but didn;t notice any benefits.
