One of the Ortlieb roll down bags, put inside whatever you want to carry it in?
Training, highway design and increasing cycle numbers are important to safety. Helmets are just a red herring.

As someone who divides his time between home office and work office, I regularly carry my laptop (admittedly not a huge beast: a Dell Latitude D610 measuring 12" by 10") in a standard Deuter Race X rucksack, with enough room left over for clothes, etc, plus zipped pockets for phone, wallet, etc. Rucksack has its own dayglo 'raincoat' too.

I have duplicate power cables and computer mouse in both offices, so never need to carry these, and keep a spare pair of shoes at work so that I don't need to carry these either. I also use non-cycling commutes to replace items in my at-work "wardrobe".
  • I would heartily recommend the Altura high-end panniers, I carry laptop and books and all sorts in them, and they never let in the water.
