It still amazes me that most drivers blame ALL cyclists for their woes.
Some of the replies on the Telegraph site are amazing retarded.
But how DARE we be on THEIR roads slowing them down.

...I wish I didn't read this stuff because it winds me up so much...Victoria is part of team GB one day, hailed as an Olympic Gold Winner, and then she has to deal with arrogant prats on a daily basis as she trains...this country sometimes makes me so, so sick...
...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...

Well as far as the car drivers are concerned they probably can't tell who it was that they so nearly killed by passing a few inches wide of their side!

...yeah, I know you are probably correct BassJunkie, but the arrogance of some drivers/motorists makes me really want to throw up...all over their shiney paint work... :x :D

...and yes I know there are arrogant cyclists as well...

WELL IF ALL CYCLISTS HAD TO CARRY REGISTRATION PLATES ETC IT WOULD MAKE IT easier for the poor motorist to know who they've nearly hit

I carry my cyclist registration number on a postage stamp affixed to the back of my shorts.
Many drivers get close enough to read it quite easily...

Yep winds me up as well....espesh when you read comment like this: "Once many, many years ago, and I'll not say where of course, on a small road I got stuck behind a bike. Just a tiny tap on the horn, not a long blare or anything rude, earned us a flip of the bird by the biker who just didn't realize that there really are some who wouldn't hesitate to tap the silly fool on the rear tire. And so I did sending him into the verge and drove past flipping the finger back. Bet he became a much better and more considerate biker after that episode."

It would be just my luck for something like this to happen when I don't have a gun

  • Snooks, that is literally crazy! I can't believe someone would actually do that. Good god. I should be more careful on the single lane roads I cycle on every weekend... All I ever encounter is tractors, which can be exciting at high speed.

Bl**dy hell... I'm going to hire a bigfoot and give that driver a taste of his own medicine... see how he enjoys being 'tapped on the rear tire'

Arrgg, reading that just annoys me. The arogant attitude of people regarding losing a few seconds and not understanding road tax, VED and insurance. I'm going to jump some lights on the way home to make me feel better.

And people who think that cyclists only have a right to be on the road if they don't hold anyone up! Aghh. Yes I sometimes regret reading the comments section too.

The comment snooks mentions is so OTT I can only hope it is made up my some attention seeking *&^*^%*.
Training, highway design and increasing cycle numbers are important to safety. Helmets are just a red herring.

Nah, it's stuff like this that makes her the best, overcoming adversity and all that!

Or maybe not and all those drivers are a bunch of ejits, but it's always the case that both sides have valid points.

    1. Some bike riders are jerks.
    2. Some drivers are jerks.
    3. Lots of people who post comments on newspapers are jerks.
    4. If a rider get run over it is usually very painful and fubars their bike, if a car driver runs over a cyclist they can get a scratch in their paint or a dent.
    5. Bikes generally travel at speeds slower than cars .
    6. Cycle lanes are generally rubbish.

Anyone who says that bikes should not be on the roads and get what they deserve for the heinous crime fo slowing them (motorists) down should be asked if they consent to having their car with them and their family in it rammed by an articulated lorry travelling at over the speed limit.

    It would:

    1. remove someone from the roads who shouldn't be there and who is a menace to others;
    2. improve the gene pool in one fell swoop and prevent bad genes being carrie dinto the future.

Might also make them think of the relative consequences for others of their own anti-social behaviour!

(I mean, why not? If a pair of cyclists riding breast in a high viz jackets with lights flashing etc can't be seen by motorists who try and take them out, why should truck drivers be exscused from using the same flimsy defence? Balance of terror I reckon, imagine people saying, omigosh, you drive 5 miles to work, but isn't it dangerous what with all the trucks...!)
'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze....

there is lanes and lanes, where i'm from is very low traffic the lanes are used to get around on foot and car etc. they are too narrow for any speed. people coming down though the lanes from the sustrans route can be a bit unneving, ie they don't reallise how long it takes to stop, down steep lanes. had a near miss with a family a while back, i'd stopped to look at what someone was doing to their house, which was very lucky as that happens, as father and son shoot around courner son just stops inches from front of car, father ends up in the ditch to the side of car, having failed to stop and taken the next best option....

had i been moving even slowly...

  • What gets me in all of this anti-cycle bile from drivers (and I say this as a driver myself) is they will pick on things that a minority of cyclists do (RLJers, riding on pavements) and then apply this blindly to the whole cycling community.

Under that logic, we can say that become some drivers do the following, they all do it:

    1. Drink and drive over the limit
    2. Drive while they have a mobile phone stuck to their ear
    3. Habitually break the speed limit (actually that probably applies to the majority of motorists)

Every time I get the 'all cyclists are RLJers' I use the same logic and provide those three examples above. Usually shuts them up (for a moment anyway - in a 'yeah, but no..' style)

The sad story of Jason MacIntyre always comes to mind on this subject :(

You're right Roger, I've dived in a few hedges, my own fault. I go more slowly now, but even so I still get taken by surprise by people who take the national speed limit on these lanes a bit too seriously!

Also *whispers* what's a sustrans route??

Sustrans the cycling charity etc, ie think the countryside is richmound park...

ah wider lanes get some further out but the ones close to my folks place are far to narrow and twisting to hit 60 mph, 30 mph at best and even then thats pushing it crumbling stone walls and old trees are not kind to the cavalier!

There is also an unerving ability of some drivers to simply try and defend another drivers wreckless behaviour even if they have nothing to do with it.

I wrote a letter to the local rag about walking across a zebra' and nearly being hit and this numpty worman wrote a reply saying I was in the wrong. How could she possibly know if she wasnt there

Just checking, do the links above not work? They seem to on mine (though I dont know why they wrote "Woolston refusal would have been overturned" for the title. :? )

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/contactus/letters/ has a form for letters, or you can post to the address on there. Its a local rag, but then what with the internet I sometimes find myself sending letters to other papers in other areas.

EDIT just reread your post.. yeah that was my original letter, thought they did change the last paragraph a little to make it fit it seems. The message is still the same however. :)
