Anyone seen the new Trek Fuel EX8(2009) in any stores at the moment..Some websites showing them (at £1700).
Anything else in that price range i should consider..
After a good all rounder basically.. and the Trek seems to tick all the boxes for me...
Cheers ..

Yup, seen the '09 EX8 an the 9 at All Terrain at the weekend - great shop, and nice blokes.
Lusting after the EX9..............need to save some pennies 1st!0 -
Yeah, seen the black and the rootbeer.
Don't be put off by the name rootbeer, the colour is superb with the white.
I'm not much of a pro, well any kind of pro, but it rides a dream . . . .
Deffo on my very short list for a new bike in the next month or so.
Will have to get a move on testing cuz I don't want them rootbeer babies going like the green did last year!Sink the eight ball. Buy the lady a drink. And nobody knows my name.0 -

Just joined the forum after lurking for a while.
Picked up my 2009 TREK fuel ex8 at the begining of August from Speeds cycles in Bromsgrove. Went for the black and white one. Initially I was trying to get a bargin 2008 bike to be honest, but lack of stock became an issue. Noticed that Speeds had 2009 ex8 come in on their website and went down for a casual look, ended up collecting it the next day!
First impressions are very good. I have done the MBWales Syfydrin Trail at Nant yr Arian
last weekend, 36km, and it took everything with ease. I am pleased to say that this bike climbs extremely well, something I was a little worried about when buying the FuelEX rather than the shorter travel Top Fuel.
Still experimenting with the forks set-up at the moment. I found out after the last ride the pressure was too high in them, resulting in short travel usage.
As per usual Avid juicy 5s make a racket when wet, hopefully replacing the pads will cure this. Any suggestions?
Overall I am extremely pleased I brought this bike and would recommend it to anyone. The paint job is stunning, looks much better in the metal than any pictures on the net etc, but more importantly this is backed up by a reassuring ride which inspires confidence in almost all conditions.
Some pictures taken the day i picked it up, before seeing any dirt:

Hi, glad to hear you loving it so much.
I ordered mine yesterday, in rootbeer! Gotta hang on till Oct 20th though
Looking at the pics, I guess I better get in an order for some 'copter tape!

I've also been looking at one of these. I also was looking at last years model, but the nice green/white one ran out of stock in my size ages ago and I didn't really like the look of the black.
Started riding again seriously this year after a bad injury which has ended my previous sporting carreer and I'm loving it. I've got a hartail which fulfills most of my local (flat and untechnical) riding needs, but now want to spread my wings and sample some of the delights the UK has to offer.
I'm looking for something that will be happy on UK red runs and is a real all rounder with an emphasis on single track fun. I'm pretty sure that the trek ticks all those boxes from the test ride I had and what i've read. My one concern is that I'd also like it to be able to handle some small drops (up to around 2 foot). When I started riding again I was around 16 stone -> currently about 15 and I doubt that I'll ever drop below 14 again as I'm a a fairly solidly built under the remaining fat. I've got no real idea how to guage the toughness of a bike to this kind of use and am unlikely to get a off road test ride as very few places stock 21.5" demo bikes.
Waht do you reckon?0 -
2 foot drops - no problems.
The ride I mentioned in Wales had some drops on that scale. A lot of the isolated sections were based over exposed rocks and loose slate wich really got the suspension working.
Remember there is 130mm of travel to assist you. I used to tackle red and black runs on a 10 year old Specialized with 75mm of travel and that is still going.
Go for it!0 -
nice looking ride and great colour and matching on the bike, I tried one of the 08 ones and liked it but not enough to buy it, good choice though.

Thanks CR33DO. I've been away from the MTB scene for 10 years and when I left, the idea was to avoid 2 foot drops and rocks. Nowadays it seems its all about the technique required to ride such features. Whilst I have to admit this seems a whole lot more fun, I does require a whole new frame of reference!0

Cheeky question - u guys who have just got their EX-8's - did u get any discount?0
-
I got my green '08 model about 10 weeks ago, it's great! My thoughts so far:
Went through the first set of Juicy 5 pads in 4-5 wet rides, mainly due to dragging the rear brake down anything remotely steep (still a beginner at this off roading business!)
Paintwork is a little soft, get some 'copter tape or lizard skins on the frame before you go out on a wet ride, or like me you'll have nasty rub marks through to the metal particularly left side of seat tube, top left of fork and either side of the downtube near the headtube. Also have to watch you don't catch the rear disc on the chainstay when putting the wheel in.
Tyres a bit too slippy in wet muddy conditions, but i'll put up with them another month yet. Tubeless conversion with the Bontrager rims/tyres was a doddle, 10 minutes a wheel and they seem to keep their pressure well enough.
I felt that the steering was a little slow (maybe because i'm used to road bikes) so i put a shorter stem on and took out two spacers. Made a massive difference and now it handles superbly. Easier to get the front up as well.
Still playing with the rebound settings on the fork and shock but seem to have the pressure/sag about right now.
Wouldn't mind removing the gear indicators (who uses these anyway?) if i can find/make a cover to put over the hole on the shifter body.0 -
Only cos I'm tight . . .
In prep for my new EX8, what size copter tape should I get?
I've never bought any before so don't know if it's better to go large and shape, or go small and often  5 or 10 cm??Sink the eight ball. Buy the lady a drink. And nobody knows my name.0 -
i used lizard skins. don't know how long these are going to last though, havent had a dry ride in ages!0

I got a decent discount on mine, and got them to agree to give my old bike a service so that I can stick it on ebay with confidence, could have done most of it myself like, but I have been far too busy playing with the new trek toy to worry about that.
Both All terrain and Chevin cycles in your area will do you a discount for cash. Basically any shop who offer free finance will do you a discount for cash. Think it through, the only way the finance provider can make any money on an interest free deal is by not giving the shop the full amount of the loan.
If you buy a bike and take say 1000 finance interest free, the bank, which will most likely be black horse, will only give the shop between £800 and £850. If paying by cash I would be looking at around a 10% discount, even on brand new 09 bikes.
No doubt they shop staff will say no at first, but then just tell them you will take the bike on the finance deal then if they won't offer a discount, they soon change their mind. If they reckon the bank take less than a 10% share, then say you will buy it on credit card then, most credit card companies charge more than 10% for using them, either way, you should get 10%!!!0 -
ive got a fuel ex9, bought it off my mate as i got it lots cheaper because he wasnt using it much awsome bike for xc and very very light, definetely reccommend the fuel range, cant imagine the ex8 been too different so it must be good...0
-
Yeah no discount for me as I went the interest free method. Though I got a free stem worth 40 quid, due to the reason timgbury mentioned and discount on a jacket
I'm happy any way.Sink the eight ball. Buy the lady a drink. And nobody knows my name.0 -
I've had my 2009 EX8 for a while now and done in the region of 150-200km around Dalby Forest and Stainburn as well as some of the trails round Surrey. I've very pleased with it so far. It give me a load of confidence sticking into the bumpy bits that I wouldn't have dreamed with my hard tail (I'm rather late to the full-sus party).
Treks are never going to be uber-desirable pieces of kit, but I do think they've tried really hard to improve their appeal as well as their performance recently. I think my bro is a little jealous, his more expensive Giant Trance (though a few years old) isn't as much fun to ride.
I bought mine from All Terrain Cycles and they were kind enough to allow me to take it out for a play for a refundable on purchase deposit. I've just taken it back for it's free first service, but to be frank they've done nothing I couldn't have done myself. Oh, and no discount unfortunately.
I'm kinda hoping that I 'accidentally' trash the wheels and finishing kit soon so I can justify some choice upgrades to drop its weight a little.

WHAT?0 -
I would have worn out the trails not to mention my legs with that amount of distance wouldn't I?! I mean kilometers.0
-
All Terrain would be my choice as down the road. Shame no discount, shall have to pop in for a 'chat' about 10
-
i got the first £1000 of mine on the cycle to work scheme, so the shop wouldnt discount that as they have to pay cyclescheme 10% which is fair enough i suppose. But i got a pair of £60-£70 shoes thrown in for the remaining £600 over the £1000 voucher.
and a shock pump, still don't know if that's standard anyway0 -
Talking of shock pump get this beauty - http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/tools/cycling-tools/shock-pumps/product/shock-x-31616 13 quid off ebay delivered!
I had to buy my shock pump.
I was so excited about leaving the shop and riding home I completely forgot to ask for oneSink the eight ball. Buy the lady a drink. And nobody knows my name.0 -
I was wondering what shock pressures people are running, I recently bought the EX8 And I am fairly new to mountain biking particularly on a full sus so have set it up as the guide with the bike has anyone found much variation or preference??
PS bike is awesome!0 -
I was thinking of going for a GT force 2.0, until I found the TREK now i really want a Fuel EX8 '09. Especially after what you've all been saying about it
Does anyone know the overall weight of it? as the GT is around 33lbs.
Thanks0 -
