Ok as im leaving on my ride to italy on sep 9th and haven't got my cheap bike sorted yet i need some quick advice. I'm looking to get a giant scr3 for the trip which will be my first proper road bike, hence the sizing question. Now i tried one out in medium (50cm) at my lbs which the guy working there reckoned fits me ok, but to be blunt the toptubes right up putting touching on my balls! is this ok or should i have more clearance? i'm 5 9"/5 10" but with a stupid 29" inside leg i think is the problem. If i went for the small 46.5cm bike instead of the medium, would i be too cramped up? the dont have a small giant in stock so trying one out isn't an option.

Cheers for any help

  • I am 6ft and found the large size (56cm I think) to be perfect for me. I have quite long legs though...so maybe not suitable for everyone.

    Nice bike though!

I am 5' 10'' and my bikes are 54cm (medium Giant) or 21''. I don't think an inch of two in the leg would make a big difference.

I think if you went to the smaller bike, your upper body might be too cramped... especially if your torso is proportionally longer than your legs for your height.

It's a lot easier to raise or lower the saddle than it is to fuss about with stems (remember, doing that will also alter the handling).
