Hi I have a friend coming over from NZ and staying in Padstow, Cornwall and I would like to know if there is any GOOD MTBing to be had in that area, and please don't suggest the camel as I know it sucks! I'm looking for some good exciting trails with plenty of climbs and fast descent's. Any input would be much appreciated.

  • i just visited cardinham woods near bodmin today. absolutely fantastic. there is something for everyone of any standard. plenty of tough climbs and all sorts of fast and testing descents. you can pick up a map there, although some of the best bits arent on there. cracking day of riding. and a nice cafe there too.

Hi - i am down there in there weeks with my own MTB. have looked at sum routes which seem do-able.
The Cameltrail to Wadebridge and thru to Bodmin is always good - but not testing.

Normally when i am down there I run up to the Vitoria Monument ( by the iron bridge on Cameltrail - south direction) and following the pasth to little petherick. the route is a walking track with lots of styes / gates and steps but it is good fun and great scenary.
You can then cycle back to Padstwo on the main road or go on the opposite side of the camel estuary and head back to the camaltrail.

Also have worked out a route up to the war memorial going west to the lifboat hopuse then follow the track up to the coast guard look out building - then raide the edde of the cliff ( not to close ) which shud take you to harllyn bay. Then either road it back or retun track . All is clear on an OS map

gd luck and let me know how u get on

You'll find a few routes posted on sharemyroute.com if you search under Cornwall, I'd recommend you go down to Perranporth and head out south St Agnes way.

Dunmere woods, between Bodmin & Wadebridge - some of the best MTB in Cornwall

Hustyns wood near Wadebridge - not bad from what I'm told, but not been there myself.

Can get to both of these just off the Camel Trail.

Not legal, but if done in the evening (after 6pm) and you are polite, the locals are OK about riding the coast path. From Bedruthan steps to Newquay is pretty good. Very hilly. Don't go if it's windy.

Further afield, there is Idless Wood near Truro and Bissoe Valley, which is just off the 'Coast to Coast' ride near Redruth.

A few of us are probably going up to Dunmere Tuesday eve. Normally meet at Borough Arms - pm me if you are thinking about tagging along

The Coastal path is exactly that - a public footpath.

People do ride on it , but it is at there own risk and it is illegal (day or night). It is obviously busier during the day.

  • fsr xc ,

noted with thanks. will take my chance on thoses paths cause the ride up from Pads to lighthouse / Harlyn bay and beyond etc looks great . and am sure that not many people will be around duirng 15thg sept onwards / cause of pending weather !
Will do camel trail but find it bit stale ?

Bodmin area mite try on bike via Camal Trail.

    thks

I'm away until 14th Sep, but if you fancy an evening ride (you'll need lights), I show you Dunmere and I will be out somewhere the following Sunday.

PM me if you want to go out.
