Don't forget that until the mid 90s, you had the Vuelta in late April to mid-May, then just a week or two until the Giro, then 2-3 weeks until the Tour. Almost non-stop...0

Giovanni Lombardi did it in 2005 too. But yeah, a lot easier since the Vuelta moved to the autumn.0

Yeap, Sastre in 2006 was 46º in the Giro, 3º in Tour y 4º in Vuelta

Interesting, that although it's now easier, in terms of timing, to ride all 3, few even think of attempting it. A couple of those riders listed rode the classics, too.
