as two mid-fifties codgers averaging cycle rides of between 30 - 40 miles at the moment, and not too good on hills! Haven't been to this area before and trying to get an idea in advance whether any fairly easy going cycling tracks that would make it worthwhile putting the bikes on the rack. Staying between Dax and Bayonne.

It is always worth taking your bike to France, even if you only use it to ride to and from the boulangerie in the morning. It is a bit hilly around there, but not cripplingly so. Stick em on the rack!

To the North of Dax and Bayonne, you have les Landes which is the flattest bit of France (and there's lots of it). A ride up the coast from Capbreton through the pine trees with the smell of the Atlantic in your nostrils would be delightful.

But don't worry too much as the French seem to have this cycling thing well sorted out, so renting bikes down there will not be a problem.
