New cassette causing freehub problems

Evening all, could do with some advice.
I've just upgraded the rear cassette on my 2007 Giant XTC 4.5 from a 9 speed SRAM to a 9 speed XT but the cassette now won't spin freely. When the lockring is only on loose the cassette does spin a bit, but once fully tightened it become very hard to spin. Could it be that tightening it is causing the back of the cassette to rub on the plastic cassette protector, which is very hard to tell by looking at it.
Or could it be that I need a new freehub body? If so how do I find out which type of new freehub body I need? Does it need to be the same make as the rear hub or do shimano/SRAM make freehub bodies that would be compatible with the Formula Disc rear hub?
Cheers

what lock ring are you using? have you fitted all the cassette spacers?
re fit the old one is it OK?
and if you need a new body it is hub specific."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
