Transfering components onto a new frame.

Has anyone transferred their bike coponents over to a new frame. How easy was it?

It is the same make and type of bike, just a carbon frame (good deal!) so I don't need to worry about components not fitting etc.

I have never done anything like this before and just need some previous feedback before I purchase.

  • Just check a few things:
(there's no guarantee that just because it's the same brand everything'll be the same sizes)

-make sure the BB shells measure the same width (can be 68mm or 73mm on XC bikes)
-check seatpost diameters are the same
-check front mech clamp size is the same
-check that the length of the head tube is the same, or if it's different that you can cover it by adding or removing spacers
-maybe need to check that both bikes require the same chainline - possibly would need a different length BB (axle length), although this one might be paranoia!
    - other than that, cable outers could well be different lengths & maybe routed differently, but it's not a bad idea to change those anyway
-the only other thing I can think of is if you had fat tyres on the old frame, check there's enough clearance on the carbon one
-just thought, same kind of thing with large discs, someone said recently that larger discs contacted the frame on his new carbon bike.

    cheers.

Got me thinking now it might be best to sell my bike and buy a complete new bike maybe.
  • Maybe, but it doesn't mean that all that list of stuff will be different, just that it might be.
  • i did very much the same in november, of my old full susser onto a carbon hardtail frame,
i went for the seat post shims as my old post was smaller than the new one required, and was cheaper than a new post! the bb was the same fortunately, and other than that it was a new headset as the carbon bike is an integrated one, forks were fine as the steerer tube is the same length! bonus as it made it a cheap build! i think with the headset and seat post shim it cost me £20 for the parts and that was it new frame ready! (built it up myself) like you by the sounds of it, A Very good pricce on the frame!!! (the joy of late night ebaying!) too good to miss!!
