hi everyone.

As the title says, I snapped my rear derailleur off in the woods today. The bit that connects it to the frame broke. The frames still good tho at least :)

My bike is a Specialized Hardrock Sport

I mangled a link in the chain a couple weeks before and had to remove a couple of links, not having the funds to get a new chain. Would the shorter chain length have increased stress on the rear mech ? It was caked in mud and grass aswell which probably didnt help!

Anyway, need to buy a new mech. Not sure which to buy. I have a budget of around £60-£70 tops, think I will get a new chain while im at it. Hopeing not to have to buy new shifters / brake levers, need to keep the cost down but still want something that will last a bit as im slowly upgrading everything untill I have a new bike :)

Been looking at SRAM X7 07 but unsure if this would work with my existing shifters ?

SRAM X-9 also but as far as I can see this is only for 9 speeds

Oh aye, I ride mostly woodland trails :)

Also advice on a new chain would be great.

Thanks.

  • is yours an 8speed as per the spec?? i think if i remember correctly that the 8speed and 9speed rear mech's are the same??? (hopefully Nicklouse will be along in a mo and confirm or not!) are you sure though that you need an new one?? or is it beyond repair?
i would be tempted to go for a deore rear mech (slightly better than the spec on the website) and if you need a new chain too then look at the KMC chains, very strong and great vfm too! that way you can get them and most likely 2 mech hangers too! (one to replace the one you broke and one for the kit bag!) all for the budget you suggested for the rear mech?!?!

shimano shifter so you HAVE to use shimano mechs. if the chain was the wrong length yes you can mess up your gears.

you will also need a new mech hanger.

  • Yes its an 8 speed.

the derailleur itself if alright, just the hanger that snapped.

aha, didnt realise the hanger + mech were bought seperatley.

thanks for the advice, will have a look about and get back.

then all you need is the hanger. simple and not too costly to replace, maybe get a spare

  • good stuff. cheers buddy :)

and spares a damn good idea ;)
  • have a look on chainreactioncycles for hangers, also worth a look on betd.co.uk as they make a lot of the hangers and you can find what other frames your bike shares the hanger with!
ideal the mechs good though, you could get 2 hangers and a chain for about £40 (basing hangers at £15 each)

  • gave my local bike shop a quick call to ask about hangers and he reckons hes got a couple in stock. gonnna take a trip down with the bike after work and get a couple off him and get him to fit a new chain for me :)
  • good oh!
if they have them, i'd go for KMC over Sram anyday! much better, stronger, smoother etc!
