The Exposure Joystick Maxx...one shop says it's good enough for average night riding (nothing too fast or technical) while others say it isn't.
I really don't want to spend £150 on something not up to the job.

cant vote on the above light, but if it helps ive just today recieved my Hope vision twin LED setup and im slightly shocked at how bright it is, how well made it is and how lightweight it is. I got it for £129.990

i have owned this since it came out and have ridden with it as a single light for both on and off road.
It is very bright, best on the head, but I would not do routes I have never ridden before.
Hassle free and very long run times, I only use the brightest setting. I think you can find it a lot cheaper now though.0 -
I have a Joystick & Enduro Maxx, Joystick is fine on it's own for trails you know well that you aren't going flat out on.0

I second the opinion of 'nferrar'; and 'boingboing12345'; but do be aware that the maker reckons to three hours at maximum brightness – 240 lumens. Would that do you, Exeter Simon?
If not, at least one Fenix L2D CE Premium Q5 torch in a LockBlock handlebar-mount, and a spare pair of high-capacity NiMh rechargeable AA batteries in a pocket (or w.h.y.) will see you through several hours, depending on which setting you use. I'd recommend my thread, 'Now it's summer I need bright lights (?)' but that would be immodest.
Bear in mind that the Fenix plus mounting can be got for about £40; and, with diligent shopping-around, the Joystick for well under the £160 some are charging. Also, USE's 2009 Exposure lights are soon to come out; I doubt that the one-emitter (J'stick) and two-emitter (Race) models will be much different to the '08 ones: notwithstanding, the 'old' ones may soon be available at a better price.

Im currently in the same boat, my budget for some good lights has gone from £100 up to £150, and these bad boys now come into the equation:
Niteflux Photon Max

Theyre £150 elsewhere and at 800 Lumens on Max with several settings, it seems a good deal!

I had a look at NiteFlux and it is recommend for road or less technical trail. See the review from http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... -max-253490 -

I think from reading the many, many threads on lighting, that no-one light can do everything for technical trail work, even with the Ay-Up MTB systems you get 2 lights, one for bars, one for helmet.
Purely from the fact any bar mounted light maybe pointing in the wrong direction when you want to head in another. Im kind of settled on the fact that a helmet light of sorts would be required for more direct viewing when away from centre.
If you read the other reviews, then the Joystick gets the same review in respect of "Great light, but not for the technical/fast trail riding"
Im looking for more in depth reviews and possibly night shots of the NEW Hope Vision 2 LED (The more powerful set) as this may steal the vote as Im currently sold on the Niteflux for the time being(!)"I don't do double-entendres, but I do like to slip a big one in occasionally"
